Love and Willpower!
People often shrug off the sturdiness of Love and how it can move a strong impulse like willpower, but I like to think of Love as the container that holds willpower and many other virtues. To clarify this point, think of a sailboat navigating a rough sea; for this boat to reach its destination safely, it requires skill, consistency, experience, and meticulous strategies. One handling error and this boat will capsize, which means a certain amount of risk-taking, and awareness is crucial in such a situation. In this analogy, we can see that what it takes to initiate willpower is preparation, it is the baseline work; the power to do and take steps to navigate a situation with precision and focus. This is why readiness is the blueprint for increasing determination and bravery to go after what we want. Now that we have scratched the surface of willpower, let’s see how it relates to Love.
Love and willpower are interconnected in several ways; Love can serve as a powerful motivator that enhances willpower, but God’s Love offers us something stronger than that and Ephesians 3:20 reveals it. “Now to him who can do immeasurably more than all we ask or imagine, according to his power that is at work within us.” The keyword here is “WITHIN US” There are times when we often think we don’t have the proper dose of courage, strength, or preparation that is crucial to control our impulses, make decisions, and take deliberate actions. I can guarantee you these inner monologs aren’t the voice of God; I know this because I have been there. To develop willpower, we need God’s love because it is the foundational virtue that can awaken the development of other virtues which are [focus, strength, faith, awareness, and self-control] we should always bear in mind that only a relationship with God can manifest these fruits of the spirits.
